The goal of this blog will undoubtedly morph over time. My initial thoughts and, more appropriately, concerns, center on and around the conservative media, its coverage of politics, political issues and other media companies, in particular (ie the “mainstream media”).
Humans are fundamentally good, selfless and empathetic beings. Plenty of people and research attest to this. Adam Smith, considered the founder of modern capitalism, has a good one:
“As we have no immediate experience of what other men feel, we can form no idea of the manner in which they are affected, but by conceiving what we ourselves should feel in the like situation [. . . . ] [I]t is by the imagination only that we can form any conception of what are his sensations [. . . .] By the imagination we place ourselves in his situation, we conceive ourselves enduring all the same torments, we enter as it were into his body, and become in some measure the same person with him, and thence form some idea of his sensation, and even feel something which, though weaker in degree, is not altogether unlike them. [. . . .] That this is the source of our fellow-feeling for the misery of others, that it is by changing places in fancy with the sufferer, that we come either to conceive or to be affected by what he feels, may be demonstrated by many obvious observations . . . (1759: 47-8)”
With that in mind, conservative media does a number of things to make us think otherwise. They demonize, falsely equate, conspire against people, agitate, provoke and have given cover to the GOP for as long as right-wing media has existed. And, most crucially, they convince people to do and think the “unthinkable”. This is no more apparent than the coverage of the family separation at the border. It’s not as if conservative media consumers pine over causing harm to migrant families, but they justify insanely cruel behavior via their conservative talking heads. *Note: “liberal” media is not innocent. They also manipulate their audiences to become outraged at conservatives and their policies. But this is (another) false equivalency. There is no comparison between the two.
What I will try to accomplish with this site is three-fold. First, a repository of select conservative news with commentary on what they are *really* conveying to their audiences. Second, a comparison to “liberal” media reporting. And three, most crucially, develop some kind of a measuring stick of how much harm they are advocating for and how much outrage is manufactured in their reporting (in the works).
